How to care for and maintain your natural hair clip in extensions

Posted on 07 March 2018

We've spent those coins on those amazing natural hair extensions, now what?! To keep your extensions looking great it’s vital that we do a bit of maintenance every now and then to get the best of them for the longest term wear.  I will admit that keeping up with kinky curly extensions can be a bit of a challenge but a bit of TLC and patience can go a mighty long way.  First things first, just to get it out of the way - treat your extensions as if they were our own natural hair. Only use water based and natural products for your extensions. Adding products (ie., hair spray, etc) that contain many harmful ingredients (alcohol) affects the natural state of your extensions. In addition, water based products are important, as they add moisture to your hair, not grease.

Remove hair from package. With binding cords intact, fully saturate hair with water, then shampoo with a sulfate free moisturizing shampoo.

Apply a generous amount of conditioners. Work conditioner through the hair using your fingers to  detangle; when sufficiently detangled with fingers, use a wide tooth comb, a Tangle Teezer or Denman style brush to further detangle the hair. (You may experience some shedding.)

Remove cords and separate the weft/clip-ins with conditioner still in the hair. Continue to de-tangle if necessary. Then rinse conditioner out. (*Apply your favourite curl enhancer after; this is optional)

Hang and allow the hair to completely air dry

Seal your wefts (when dry)

Xotica's natural hair clip in extensions will allow you to do an array of styles that you would normally do with your own hair.

For daily maintenance

  • Before bed, loosely two strand twist hair into large sections. Cover with a silk lined bonnet or silk scarf. (If wearing clip-ins, remove clips)
  • In the morning, take twists down. Mist lightly with water or with your favourite liquid leave-in conditioner. Apply a moisturizing cream. (To reduce frizz and tame curls apply a curl enhancer after.)

Washing your extensions

We recommend that you wash your natural kinky clip in extensions weekly. (Product build-up can weigh down extensions and increase tangling.)

  • Section hair into 4-6 sections; wash each section at a time
  • Detangle hair extensions during pre-poo (spritz hair with water, add conditioner) - Detangle extensions and condition (for deep conditioning, leave conditioner on for 15 to 30 minutes; you can use the Baggy Method)
  • Shampoo with sulfate free shampoo/some people my forego the shampoo
  • Re-apply a conditioner after shampooing
  • Rinse conditioner
  • Apply a curl styler (optional)
  • Air dry

How to reduce tangling & shedding

  • Always seal your wefts
  • Keep extensions sufficiently moisturized
  • Co-wash and de-tangle frequently (do not go beyond a week without de-tangling)
  • De-tangle from bottom of the weft up to the top
  • Reduce the use of heating tools and chemical use (ie. dyeing)

Coloring Extensions

*Coloring can loosen the texture of curls

  • Seek professional help when coloring hair
  • If you decide to DIY, take care to lift hair slowly with a low volume developer
  • Condition even more frequently as coloring can cause dryness and increase tangles.
